Catalog Codes

After the name of the plant you will find the flower color, height, flowering time, and hardiness zone. The small print after the price of each variety indicates where to find the plant in the nursery. For example, 19M means the plant is in row 19, middle section; 19F means row 19, front section; 19B means row 19, back section. Each row in the nursery is clearly marked. An * after the row number in the catalog means stock is very limited.

Hardiness Zones & Bloom Times

Hardiness is an estimation of a plant’s ability to withstand cold temperatures. Cultural conditions, summer heat, amount of water and other conditions can also have an influence.

Fargesia
The "Umbrella Bamboo" has pea-green foliage and a very graceful habit. The leaves are small and thin which gives a rather delicate appearance. I have grown it in Carlisle for many years so it must be hardy. Most important is that it clumps and it does not run.

Ferns
No shade garden should exist without at least a few ferns. They come in many shapes and sizes. These are all initially propagated from spores. It takes some time as they must go through an alternation of generation, before the fern appears. All grow best with a compost enriched soil.

Forsythia
A Forsythia with outstanding variegated foliage. Each leaf vein is traced in cream giving the leaf a lace-like network that looks a crackle finish. An easy carefree accent shrub that grows best in light shade or full sun. No problem with hardiness here in Carlisle.

Galax
Native to the Southeastern United States the "Wandflower" is very slow to increase. They have white flowers on tall stems and shiny dark green leaves. A shady spot in the shade with leaf mold added to the soil is required.

Galium
"Sweet Woodruff" has small white flowers in the spring. It can spread quickly to make an attractive ground cover. It grows best in the shade, but it will tolerate some sun.

Genista
These drought tolerant plants need a well-drained sunny spot. They have few if any pests and are very winter hardy.

Gentiana
These "Gentians" have spectacular bright blue flowers that are seldom seen in hardy perennials. They grow best in areas with afternoon shade. All are slow growing and most do not spread. They enjoy a very well-drained soil rich with organic matter.

Geranium
The "Cranesbills" are not the tender annuals that have the common name "Geranium". All varieties we list are hardy perennials. Gillenia (a.k.a. Porteranthus)
Native to Eastern United States, it flowers in early summer. The clean white flowers will brighten the lightly shaded garden. "Bowman's Root" likes a very well-drained, organic rich soil.

Glaucidium
Native to Japan, it flowers in early spring. The large lavender flowers are a welcome addition to the shaded garden. A spectacular plant that likes a very well-drained, organic rich soil. It is slow growing. We grow them from seed (it takes four or five years to get to the size we sell). Occasionally, a rare white one shows up.

Haberia
This beautiful plant is related to the African Violet. It is quite hardy and fairly easy to grow. It needs a spot in light shade and it needs a very well-drained, organic rich soil.

Hakonechloa
The "Hakone Grass" is clumping and it makes an outstanding addition to the shady border. The foliage has a graceful appearance. It is very easy to grow in humus rich soil. Divide only in the spring as other times usually results in dieback.

Helonias
The "Swamp Pink" grows along the Atlantic coast in sphagnum bogs. They are interesting collector's plants for the bog garden or near water in a peaty acid soil. The pink flowers can get to 24 inches in a dense spike-like raceme.

Hemerocallis
The "Daylilies are among the easiest to grow perennials. They grow best in full sun with adequate moisture. All have stout flower scapes and graceful arching foliage. Hepatica
These shade loving plants flower very early in the spring with star-shaped flowers. They need a well-drained soil rich with organic matter. Most come from limestone areas and enjoy a slightly high pH (7.5-8). All are very slow to increase.

Herniara
The "Rupturewort" looks and grows like thyme, but is not as fussy. Given sharp drainage and a little humus in the soil it should provide years of pleasure in a sunny spot.

Heuchera
The shade loving "Coral Bells" are native to the United States. They flower early in the summer with small flowers on tall stems making graceful sprays. They grow in sun or shade, but to look their best, darker leafed forms are better with afternoon shade . They are easy in a well-drained soil, rich with organic material. Best divided every three or four years.

Hosta
Hosta have wonderful foliage. They are easy to grow in any well-drained soil, rich with organic matter. They enjoy the shade and appreciate moisture, but they will tolerate drier conditions. Larger varieties take a few years to reach their ultimate size. As a general rule, the bluer the hosta the more shade they seem to require. Isopyrum
The "False Rue Anemone" needs light shade. The white star-shaped flowers last about four weeks in the spring. Plants go dormant in the summer and often begin to show new growth late in the fall. They appreciate a rich, well-drained soil.

Ixeris
This comes from the mountains of Japan. It is a trailing plant that forms a vigorous ground cover. Fast spreading, it is one of the few plants that will grow well under maples in the shade. Ixeris is not fussy about soil conditions.

Jeffersonia
"Twinleaf" is native to Eastern United States. The flowers only last a few days but the wonderful foliage persists the full season. Grown in a well-drained, rich soil, it still takes awhile to get fully established.

Jovibarda
We have been growing this for years and have yet to see a flower. It looks like a "Hen and Chicken", but does not increase the same way. Young rosettes are formed on the tips of the leaves. As they increase in size, they roll off, to grow in a new spot nearby. Full sun and good drainage are needed.

Kalimeris
These daisy-flowered plants are the Asian counterpart to the American aster. They are grown best in full sun with a well-drained, rich soil.

Kirengeshoma
Marvelous foliage plants with nice buds that develop into hanging yellow flowers. It thrives in the shade needing a moist, rich soil. It takes a few years for the plant to mature into a handsome specimen.

Lamiastrum
This ground cover is slow to spread. It is most often grown for its silver-white splashed foliage and not the yellow flowers. It seems to be disease and insect resistant in the sun or shade.

Lamium
Lamium have nicely variegated foliage. They make a wonderful ground cover in the sun or shade. The ideal soil is well-drained, with a lot of added compost. The do not enjoy containers in the heat of summer.

Lavandula
"Lavender" is excellent for edging or growing in herb gardens. It has spikes of purple flowers and silver foliage. It needs full sun and a well-drained soil. Prune back to six inches in the spring. It does not like open winters or winter wet.

Lewisia
These west coast natives are a great addition to the rock garden, wall or trough. In the wild, Lewisia cotyledon gets almost no rain from mid-July to September and they demand very sharp drainage in full sun or very light shade.

Liriope
We obtained this fine "Lily Turf" from Peter Del Tredici who collected it in China. The leaves are very wide and the plant slowly clumps. It is not a fast grower but makes an outstanding addition to the shade garden. It likes a spot rich with organic matter. The soil should be well-drained. It has been hardy at the Arnold Arboretum for a number of years.

Lobelia
These plants grow in the sun or shade. They like a rich soil with adequate moisture. Protection from the winter's sun is beneficial. Deadhead to prevent from spreading.

This "Asian Skunk Cabbage" is a gem in the wet garden. It has very large leaves and beautiful white flowers in the spring. It takes a few years to get up to mature size, but it is well worth the wait.. They are easy to grow in a moist soil rich with organic matter.
